Course Statement 

  1. The main focus of this Kids Club course is for students to deepen their existing knowledge of North American English and culture. This term has an American children's authors and illustrators theme! We will try to read classics such as Green Eggs and Ham, Bedtime for Francis, Goodnight Moon, A Tiger Called Tomas, Where the Wild Things Are, etc. I would like to concentrate on Newberry Honor Books, Caldecott Honor Books but, I will also explore series from the I Can Read canon and others. We will be learning about different authors from Dr. Seuss, Russell Hoban, Margaret Louise Brown, Maurice Sendak, etc. I will incorporate as much American culture as well into the mix as I present our Holiday and Seasonal traditions not to mention regional including customs such as sugar maple tapping in the Midwest, blueberry and cranberry picking in New England, Christmas decorating and light displays, Thanksgiving Foodways, Hanukkah traditions (Dreidel Song) and anything I find which will excite and delight your child! 

  1.   Course Objectives  

At the end of the trimester, students successfully completing this course will be able to:  

-Describe with illustrative and descriptive language scenes from American classics while amplifying their vocabulary. 

-Articulate preferences and tastes in their own voice. 

-Use vocabulary and expressions related to: school, describing people and objects, seasons and weather, home and family, Halloween, Indigenous People´s Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukkah, etc.  

-Form sentences/ questions/ using to be (affirmative and negative), commands, let’s, prepositions of place
